Yes this is true and is actually a very common occurrence. When your gas cap is left off or not tightened properly, gas fumes escape, which causes the computer to detect an emissions leak. On some vehicles the gas cap can be installed correctly and the light will reset itself. On others, a technician will have to reset the system for it to turn off.
